Clearly my mind lied, since I always thought there was much more shirtless Ade to be seen. Maybe I was suffering Watch, Rewind and Repeat syndrome at the time...Whatever, Ade is a wonderful specimen in his Enid Blyton guise! I hope it brings some joy to an Ade lover somewhere! Certainly did me =)

Well here is some eye-candy of the Rik variety ;)

I went on about Rik being lovely and gorgeous in a previous post about the Beat Generation. I wanted to make good on my fangirling and try and provide the relevant proof! The result is a bit of a picspam of black and white Rik as the beautiful Jeremy! The character sort of reminds me of Brian from Spaced. The likeness is there, although I find Rik more adorable, and their artsy, loner personalties are also very similar. Also, OMG he has the most adorable fuzzy jumper. I WANT TO HUG HIM.

Lister/Rimmer OTP?

    I have issues with this, as much as I love Lister/Rimmer. Please allow me to vent! And if you disagree, which I’m sure you might (!), please do leave comments! And please do remember this is my own (perhaps rather rash) opinion.

    My gripe, and the thing which turned me off the pairing for a little while, was the blatant abuse of their dynamics through series 7. Actually from series 4 really, but series 7 is the big one. You know, when something happened ;)

    For me Lister/Rimmer slash could only occur in series 1 or 2. Maybe 3. But certainly not any later. Hear me out! I’ll try to explain!

    Series 1 and 2 were a slashers treat for Lister/Rimmer fans. In these early series the show really was just about them. It was a true sitcom. Sure it was set in space, and it dealt with the sci-fi plots, but it was character which came first. I think it’s interesting to note that it is in perhaps series 1 and 2 that we learn the most about our two protagonists. In fact I’ll point to the season 2 ep Thanks For The Memory as the most likely time in the series ever that Rimmer and Lister were ever going to get it on. Why? Well this was the first time really that Rimmer’s rather hard and official looking exterior crumbled and we learnt he might have some decent reasons for being such a bastard (although Me2 had it’s moments toward the end, it still did a fine job of demonising Rimmer to the extreme at plenty of points). But as well as attracting viewer sympathy in TFTM, Rimmer also, (and this is very rare) visibly attracted Lister’s sympathy. You could see Lister’s empathetic face when Rimmer, as drunk as he was, confessed some terribly embarrassing stuff.

    In this ep Lister also tried to help Rimmer by giving him one of his own memories. It was such a kind thing to do, and considering Rimmer was a hologram, it was perhaps the only thing he could do which didn’t involve physical contact. You see what I’m getting at...;) -pulls mind out of the gutter-

    Now series 3 was all good; it was still much more about the characters than anything else. But there were subtle character changes. I don’t think, as argued by many, that Rimmer and Lister changed at all, but I do think the addition of Kryten really changed the group dynamics. It really became more about Rimmer bossing Kryten around, and Lister slobbing about with the Cat. We also shouldn’t forget the more adventurous expeditions they went on, no longer so confined to Red Dwarf. So inevitably the Rimmer/Lister interaction had to lessen. It was sad, but as I said, series 3 still, in my opinion, kept character to the forefront. I mean there was more action, but the action was defined by the characters’ own decisions. Not just for the necessity of an action scene.

    Series four. The day the slash died. I’m sorry, it was. This was the season, and plently of Dwarf fans will tell you, that the sci-fi really did come to the forefront and the characters were more or less shoved into the backseat. Yes, I know Red Dwarf is technically sci-fi as well as sitcom, but for me it wasn’t about that. Lost in a sea of White Holes, Curry Monsters, Wax Droids and chickens, Rimmer and Lister barely got the chance to snipe at each other. It was a far cry from the many hours they spent in seasons 1 and 2 lying in their bunks and mulling over various topics. Ahem. Don’t get me wrong, I love series 4 for what it is, a great comedic scifi series, and I suppose it was a showcase for Kryten, who up until that point had been used rather sparingly and more or less for exposition. But there were times when I recoiled and yearned for the black and white series 1 and 2 days. But it sometimes seemed like Rimmer was there for the exposition and suddenly Lister had transformed into a strange all-American macho hero type. What happened to the loveable slob? Perhaps certain quotes in series 4 hinted at the slash, far between and very few. I think, if slashers squinted and looked really hard, they could see a little Rimmer/Lister interaction in Dimension Jump, and I point you to the interesting piece of dialogue in DNA between Lister and Rimmer, when it appears Rimmer genuinely cares about Lister’s well being before he transforms into the mini-terminator type. But other than that...well. Bleh.

    From then on Lister/Rimmer became nonexistent. Yes, I saw Terraform. But I didn’t buy the hug, and I didn’t like the cruel ending. True Lister is the one who decides they must rescue Rimmer, but for me that wasn’t slash potential. That was just Lister being the decent guy he so often is. Adding salt to the wound is Holoship, where horror of horrors, Rimmer gets laid! It’s nice and all, but what of Lister, his boyfriend in waiting? Surely he was getting a little jealous by this point?

    Series 6 is one which, as much as I try, I really can’t like very much. It all looks too wooden, too rehearsed. I guess it’s partly to do with the loss of Red Dwarf herself, but the series for me doesn’t sit right. The only one which I can really sit through is Gunmen, and even then I hurt at the very lack of Lister/Rimmer

    Series 7, when the slash became canon..sort of. And as crazy as it sounds I really, really don’t like it! For me, the joke had been played too blatantly for it to work. In the past few series Rimmer and Lister no longer hated each other at all, throughout series’ 4, 5 and 6 they had lost that edgy dynamic I had so loved in the first three seasons. They were too complacent. So when The Kiss happened I didn’t cheer. I laughed, because it was funny, but I wasn’t squee-ing in slashy goodness. If that kiss had happened in BTL five series earlier I would have been going into crazy fangirl overdrive mode.

    And from then on, into series 8, my attitude was much the same. Rimmer and Lister were no longer enemies. Far from it, they were mates of sorts. My love for the pairing died. It seemed the couple had managed to sort out their differences, got over their angst and generally act like likely lads. It wasn’t exciting . There was no tension. Arrgh I wanted my tension!

    Maybe I’m just coming across a series 1 and 2 elitist, but I do want to stress I enjoy the later series. Yes, I can even find the funny in 7 and 8 if I’m in the right mood. :) But looking at it from a purely slash perspective, those early military and ocean grey are, for me, the slashy days.

    Anyone agree? Disagree? I would love to hear other peoples opinions on the R/L relationship throughout the series. :)

Falling in love with Gorgeous Parodies and Celluloid

And ridiculous too! Did I mention I’m currently working my way through the Comic Strip DVD? Well, more stuck eyes agape on disk 1 where lovely, broody, angry young man Rik Mayall insists of making me drool with his silly and cute beard and fluffy hair. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about the Beat Generation, it is this: Rik Mayall is Gorgeous, and needs to be in black and white all the time, please.

Actually black and white seems to suit all of them; I even found myself cooing a bit over Ade, despite him playing the ultimate drip of the gang. Desmond is cringe worthy, and yet I find myself going “aww” every now and then anyway. And that bit when he really wants to Do It To Dawn’s character, my toes curl and I wish he’d shut up and go away somewhere.

Also Jennifer Saunders is sexy with that American drawl. And probably Dawn French had the best line; “It feels like I’m going through a stargate. Maybe its these diet pills, or buddha.” In fact, Dawn’s character is great, and I love her and her constant gushing. She’s like the ultimate fangirl.

And I will never stop being amazed over Nigel Planer. The man is some sort of chameleon. He is ultimate smarm in this.

There’s something infinitely sexy to me about black and white films in general; the way they exaggerate the eyes and the shadows and curves of peoples faces. There are certain black and white films I’m mesmorised by; like James Stewart in most films, but especially Harvey. And then my small obsession with Bette Davis, which came about after I watched the shamelessly melodramatic and wonderful Whatever Happened To Baby Jane. This only happened because I adore George “the cad!” Sanders, and whilst hunting down a few of his films accidently discovered Bette Davis. When this happened I started hunting down all of her films and a new obsession was born! It is, I’ll admit, because there’s something romantic about it all. I’m a total sap about these sort of things, which is contradictory when I like stuff which definitely isn’t like that at all. But then, I guess this is what the Comic Strip was about; all their films were diverse and have at least one subject to appeal to anybody. It’s nice to see Rik playing an annoying ponce in one film, and a quieter ponce in the next sort of thing ;)

This black and white love is probably why I fell for The Beat Generation film at once. It’s hideously shallow of me, and I should probably be commenting on the actual comedy a little more, but I could sit and stare at Jeremy and his exaggerated eyes and ridiculous tortured soul for a long time.

It’s probably all very worrying, and I wanted to be serious about the whole Jack Kerouac thing, since I watched the Russell Brand documentary that aired last Christmas and I found it very interesting. Unfortunately, now that I’ve witnessed the Comic Strips Beat Generation, I’ll never be properly interested again. Not like a good serious scholar, anyway. I’ll just snigger and think about one-legged Dawn French, or Nigel Planer and his banana. And mostly Rik being devastatingly cute.

Does anyone else have gushing thoughts about the Comic Strips Beat Generation? And what old timey black and white films, specifically of the romantic-cad character sort, would anybody recommend?

Also, does anyone else think it’s insane that there isn’t hot Man-Love fanfic between Jeremy/Anyone? Hell, I’ll have het too!

And Jeremy might just be a little bit more adorable than Kevin Turvey? Only a -little- X3

Robin Hood, the honeymoon is over

STUPIDLY LATE REVIEW.
Forgive the ranting. I wasn't well.

So, I entered the new year with grief and sorrow (although there was much wine, joy, sickness and cats involved in the actual bringing in the new year) and have almost certainly had one of my most promising fandom characters killed off in my mind.

Robin Hood fandom, in which I fell for the delicious Guy of Gisbourne, not just for the fact that he was DDG and is Richard Armatage, I shall stress; but also because he seemed a conflicted and complicated character. Someone who walked that fine and interesting line between good and evil. Then the writers went and did away with his character and introduced OOCguy! Who enjoys stabbing and killing the woman he’s spent much of his time pining and risking his life over! Oh BBC writers. You have saddened me so much.

And I’m not just bitter about Guy’s apparent devolution in character, the whole finale was horrid for just about all Robin Hood fandom, (and most particularly the slashers and those of us who like our patronising Girl Power *raises hand*) because such key characters were cast away in bare heartbeats. Marian was killed off (courtesy of OOC!guy, of course) then Djaq and Will decided to stay in the Holy Land. I’m not complaining that they finally got together; that was all sweet if tiresome, since it was all left to this final episode, but now they’re no longer part of the gang and I always thought Will and Djaq had much character potential left in them. -sigh- And now Robin is left to grieve over his loss and also contemplate how best to kill Gisbourne. Some ships have sunk and others might already be springing leaks since all these revelations came about.

Since Gisbourne is the character I fawn about, and actually enjoyed with Marian (OMG het!) as well as Robin, I feel like his character has been hurt the most, and anyone like myself who was hoping and almost expecting redemptive!guy in the finale was to be bitterly disappointed and left with no small sense of hope either. I guess there is always incredible hate sex between he and Robin. As in hatesex and then I KEEEL you cos you just happened to murder my wife. You know. usually I can stretch my imagination, and make couples happen-hell, my other OTPs should be proof enough for that- but with this I just can’t see it. Even though my favourite couples always seem to hate each other at the beginning, I think the Guy/Robin dynamic has just crossed the line after Guys heinous act.

Still, I can be mildly comforted by the fact that Guy wasn’t the only one acting OOC this ep. It seemed Marian and Robin themselves had also been replaced with silly lookalikes. I taped the final episode, expecting to cry with some sense of satisfaction, expecting Guy to die doing something for the good, or maybe offering Marian some kind gesture which proved his good heart. Instead it went the other way and I’ve already taped over the episode with a JK Rolwing interview, no less.

Never mind. I’ll probably still be watching series 3 when it starts up, sucker that I am. I’m interested to know how Robin is going to go about torturing and killing off misguided Guy, and there will apparently be Friar Tuck. I await the Tuck/Little John porn with baited breath. Livejournal has never failed me before!

Yeah. Ranting review is ranting. I was supposed to post this yonks ago. Then my internet was took away. Looking back, I've calmed down a bit, and I'll definitely be watching the new series for the pure shallowness of my Guy-Love. If anyone still cares about anything related to these mad rantings, I'd love to hear them :)
